As of yesterday, the patronales have officially begun. The novena started at 6:00 a.m. yesterday morning with the annual procession with San Francisco to the base of el cerro (the little mountain with the cave where legend has it that St. Francis appeared).

We were joined along the way by Fr. Murphy and the Pedro Santana contingent, accompanied by their San José:

San José y San Francisco:

At the base of el cerro they played and danced los palos for San Francisco:

It's tradition to bring a rock along with you on the procession. The rock represents your sins - the bigger the rock, the greater your sins. When you reach the base of the mountain, you cast off your sins by throwing away your rock:

We ended with Mass, back in the church.
The novena continues each night until the feast of St. Francis on October 4th. The town is definitely shifting into fiesta mode.
